Volcanoes National Park
Nestled in the heart of Central Africa, there lies a place so high up that even the thought of it might make you shiver more than you could sweat. The place is the Virungas, a majestic mountain range towering almost 15,000 feet above the ground, draped in a lush, green rainforest that stretches as far as the eyes could see. Such is the description provided by the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey, who marveled at the wonder of the Virungas.
In the far northwest of Rwanda, lies the Volcanoes National Park, which has been established to protect the steep slopes of this mountain range, therefore, ensuring the survival of the endangered mountain gorilla and a vast variety of montane ecosystems. The park is a rich mosaic of evergreen and bamboo forests, open grasslands, swamps, and heath, each providing a different ecosystem.
The park is named after a chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif, including Karisimbi – the highest at 4,507m, Bisoke with its verdant crater lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura. As such, exploring the park is like traversing through a volcanic paradise.
Venturing into the rainforest to track endangered mountain gorillas is a magical way to immerse oneself in the wonders of nature. As you delve deeper into the lush forest, the calls of over 200 species of colorful birds will greet you, and the chattering of the rare golden monkey will fill the air. This experience is simply unparalleled and truly unique.
Volcanoes National Park has so much more to offer beyond the gorillas, including Buhanga Eco-Park, an ancient forest brimming with Rwanda’s most intriguing folklore, and Musanze Caves, formed an awe-inspiring 62 million years ago after the last estimated volcanic eruption. At Buhanga Eco-Park, you’ll be able to explore captivating legends from the local people, and at Musanze Caves, you will be astonished by the geological marvel that the caves are. These attractions make this area a must-visit location that will leave you feeling inspired and wowed.
